FIVE KILLED IN HEAD-ON SMASH

Five men were killed today in a horrendous head-on collision between two vans.

Another man was fighting for his life in hospital and two others were seriously injured in the accident on the A985 near Dunfermline in Fife.

A senior ambulanceman at the scene said their injuries ‘were compatible with an air crash’.

Police found the engine from one of the vans more than 120 feet from the scene of the impact.

The collision happened shortly before 8am on the A985 between Bluther Burn Bridge and Cairneyhill roundabout, not far from Kincardine Bridge.

Main Street, Cairneyhill

Firemen cut victims from the wreckage and a medical team from Dunfermline and West Fife Hospital treated the injured at the scene.

Police said the road would be closed for several hours.

The AA warned drivers earlier today to beware of isolated ice patches.
